Pine Lodge Resort Elopement
We met in 2005 in a pub in Manchester, England. We had some mutual friends but it took some time before he got my phone number from a friend & texted me to ask if I would go on a date. After a few months we were inseparable but then I had to go off to University. We did long distance for a while whilst I was studying, just seeing each other on the weekends & through the holidays. After I finished University, I moved back to Manchester & went to live with Matt who at the time shared a house with a friend. The following year, we moved out & got our first place together, then a couple of years after that we decided to try to emigrate to Canada. It was a long process but just before Christmas 2011, we got the call to say we’d been accepted. On 26 June 2012, we got on the one-way flight to Ottawa & we have not looked back since.
Matt proposed in June 2013. He had arranged for us to take a flight over Ottawa in small prop plane as a belated birthday gift. It was just the two of us & the pilot. Only a few minutes into the flight, I started to feel really sick & the pilot kept nervously looking back at me & passed me a sick bag. I was trying to hold it together but I felt so awful that I asked if we could go back to the airport. Matt said “let’s just go past my work building because I told them I would take some photo’s”. I was so mad, thinking I can’t believe he’s preoccupied with work when it’s supposed to be a personal thing we’re doing. When we got close to the building, Matt asked me to take some photo’s & I said I couldn’t because I really wasn’t feeling well at this point. He said the building was on my side of the plane so I had to take the photo’s & when I looked out, I saw that he had spelled out “Amy Marry Me” in red letters on the roof of the building. When I looked back at Matt, he was holding the ring. He said he asked me to marry him but I didn’t hear him. I took the ring anyways. He had planned for us to go out for a nice meal in the evening to celebrate but we ended up staying in & ordering a pizza because I still felt ill from the flight.
We have a dog named Chester. We got him a year after we moved to Canada & he’s 2 1/2 now. He’s a Portuguese Water Dog. He’s a massive part of our lives & has helped us gain a lot of friends in our neighbourhood.
